Dr. Barry Deatrick is Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Maryland, and Surgical Director of the University of Maryland Extracorporeal Life Support Program. A cum laude graduate of the University of Michigan’s Inteflex program in 2005, Dr. Deatrick completed residencies in General Surgery, Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery and Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at the University of Michigan. As part of his general surgery education, he completed a NIH T32 research fellowship in vascular biology with the Jobst Vascular Research Laboratory, and was a member of the Extracorporeal Life Support laboratory with Dr. Robert Bartlett. His clinical interests include pediatric and adult congenital heart surgery, with an emphasis on acute physiology and critical care, including heart and lung transplantation, extracorporeal life support and mechanical circulatory support. Clinical and basic science research interests include extracorporeal circulation and life support, cardiopulmonary support devices, blood-surface interaction and thrombogenesis, and ex-vivo organ preservation for transplantation.
